About Zubin Mehta
Born into a family with a rich history in music, Zubin Mehta developed a love for music when he was very young. He was initially trained by his dad, Mehli, who was the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. He started gaining attention at the age of 21 years when he worked with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic as a conductor.
In 1961, he joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra where he worked as the music director. The following year, he served in a similar position at the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The famous Indian conductor was named Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s Music Adviser in 1969 before he was promoted to the Music Director for Life position in 1981. He has also worked with other musical groups like the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and the New York Philharmonic.
Family
His mother is Tehmina Mehta. He’s the brother of art executive Zarin Mehta. Until 1964, he was married to Carmen Lasky and they had two children named Zarina, and Mervon.
He later tied the knot with movie actress Nancy Kovack in 1969. He has a child named Alexandra from a relationship he had prior to his second marriage.
Education
Before enrolling at Mumbai’s St. Xavier's College to read medicine, Mehta studied at St. Mary's School, which is also located in Mumbai. He joined the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna at age 18.
Awards
In 2001, he received the Padma Vibhushan award. Other accolades that he has received include the Dan David Prize, and Kennedy Center Honor.
Trivia
He collaborated with ace musician Ravi Shankar on many projects.
