About Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Gagarin was a Russian Soviet pilot and cosmonaut.
Career
Early Yuri Gagarin's life, he suffered from Nazi occupation during World War II. He and his family survived, and Gagarin went on to train to be a pilot. He was drafted into the Soviet Army in 1955, and he served int eh Soviet Air Force starting in 1957. Three years later, he joined the Soviet space program. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person to go to space, piloting the spacecraft Vostok 1. Once there, he orbited the planet. Upon return, he was given the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
