About Yukio Mishima
Even though Yukio Mishima continues to live on in Japanese people’s memories as a controversial figure due to his political activities, he is regarded in the literary world as one of Japan’s most significant authors of the 20th century.
Through the emphasis on themes such as eroticism, beauty and death, he gained critical acclaim through books such as “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion”, “Confessions of a Mask” and “Sun and Steel”.
Outside of writing, he was a nationalist, who founded Tatenokai, the private militia, which was dedicated to extolling the traditional values of Japan.
Family Life
He was the son of Shizue and Azusa Hiraoka. His birth name was Kimitake Hiraoka. He had two younger siblings. He was married to Yōko Sugiyama, with whom he had two children, from 1958 until his death.
Accolades
He won awards such as the Yomiuri Prize, Mainichi Art Prize, Shincho Prize and was a finalist in 1963 for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Death
He died by suicide on 25 November 1970.
