About Yo-Yo Ma
French-born American musician of Chinese descent, Yo-Yo Ma picked up the cello at four years old and never looked back. Considered a child prodigy then, Ma has gone on to cement his name on the tall list of some of the greatest classical musicians who have ever lived and has won multiple awards to that effect. His work has been featured in films such as “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Seven Years in Tibet”.
Family Life
He was born to singer Marina Lu and professor of music and violinist, Hiao-Tsiun Ma. He has a sister named Yeou-Cheng Ma who became a pediatrician after playing the violin for a while.
He has two children, Emily and Nicholas, with Jill Hornor, whom he has been married to since 1978.
Honors
As of 2020, Ma has been a recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, the 2011 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the 2001 National Medal of Arts, the 1999 Glenn Gould Prize and a host of other notable accolades.
Trivia
He performed at the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty and former US President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony.
