About Yo-Yo Ma
Yo-Yo Ma is a multiple Grammy Award-winning American-Chinese cellist, composer, humanitarian and educator who has over the years released several dozens of albums and performed with orchestras around the globe. In 1992, he released an album titled Hush along with jazz vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin. In 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama bestowed upon him the most prestigious civilian honor in America, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is widely regarded as the world’s most successful living cellist.
Personal Life
In 1978, he got married to Jill Hornor, with whom he fathered two children: Emily and Nicholas Ma.
Trivia
In 2001, People Magazine named him the “Sexiest Classical Musician”.
At the young age of seven, he had the unique opportunity to perform for U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
He performed at the 2009 inauguration ceremony of Barack Obama.
He often performs with a 1733 Italian cello, which is known by the nickname “Petunia”. The cello is estimated to be worth in the region of $2.5 million.
