About Yahya Jammeh
Yahya Jammeh, a former military commander and politician from The Gambia, was the country's president from 1996 to 2017. Prior to that he served as the AFPRC's chairman from 1994 to 1996.
Bloodless coup d’etat
From 1978 to 1983, he attended Gambia High School in Banjul, and between 1984 and 1989, he worked as a gendarme. After receiving his commission as an army lieutenant, he oversaw the Military Police from 1992 to 1994. He deposed the Dawda Jawara administration in a bloodless coup d'état in July 1994, placed himself as the head of the AFPRC, a military junta, and governed by decree until his election as president in 1996.
Presidency
Yahya Jammeh was re-elected as president in 2001, 2006, and 2011, but he was defeated by Adama Barrow in 2016. During his time as president, opposition parties, LGBT persons, and anti-government journalists were clamped down on. His foreign policies caused ongoing tension with Senegal, his only neighbor.
In 2013, Jammeh removed the Gambia from the Commonwealth of Nations, and in 2016, he started the process of removing it from the International Criminal Court (later rescinded by the Barrow government).
Crime against his people
He is accused of raping several young ladies in addition to claims of corruption and violating human rights. The Jammeh regime did not only carry out many human rights violations, but it stole millions of dollars from the nation's purse to support a lavish lifestyle of the ruling class.
Many nations blocked his assets when he left power, leading to his self-imposed exile in 2016.
