About Wu Zetian
Wu Zetian is a preeminent figure in China’s history. She lived a very inspirational life piloted by her rise from being a concubine to being the Empire of China in 618. She was also the only legitimate female Chinese Sovereign in history.
Early life
At the age of 14, Wu was sent to the palace of Emperor Taizong of Tang to be his lesser wife (young concubine). We then became the favorite concubine of Emperor Gaozong, who succeeded Taizong in 649. She was recorded to have eliminated all the other concubines in the palace to become the Empress in 655. Wu gave birth to one daughter and four sons with Gaozong.
Rise to the throne
Emperor Gaozong was ill for the majority of his reign. It was recorded that Wu used her influence to eliminate and execute all statesmen and opponents who were against her orders for the empire when the Emperor was sick. The Emperor also totally relied on her to rule during his sickness.
After disposing of and exiling Emperor Zhongzong and Ruizong, who succeeded the throne after Emperor Gaozong died, Wu Zetian ascended the throne as Empress regnant in 690 until 705.
Reign
She expanded the Chinese empire during her reign, grew its economy immensely, and ushered in great Chinese civilization.
