About Wilma Mankiller
When Wilma Mankiller was named as the chief of Native American (also known as the Cherokee Nation) in 1985, she became the first woman to hold that position. Before her appointment, she served as the deputy chief under Ross Swimmer.
She was also known for her numerous civil rights campaigns and gained additional fame as the founder of the Native American Youth Center in East Oakland. She was also an author and published many books including "Education and Native Americans: Entering the Twenty-First Century on Our Own Terms" and “Every Day is a Good Day: Reflections by Contemporary Indigenous Women”.
Her 1993 autobiography titled “Mankiller: A Chief and Her People” was considered as her most popular publication.
Family
Her parents Charley Mankiller and Clara Irene Sutton played key roles in her rise to fame. She was raised alongside five other siblings. After divorcing Hugo Olaya in 1974, she tied the knot with Charlie Soap in 1986. She left behind two children.
Education
She studied at San Francisco State University, and the University of Arkansas.
Recognitions
Mankiller was honored with many accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame.
Trivia
In 1995, she was sued for allegedly embezzling the nation’s funds.
Some of her developmental projects were featured in films titled “The Cherokee Word for Water”.
