The Oscar-winning writer and director of the premier “A Star Is Born” (1937), William Augustus Wellman was an American director best known for his crime, adventure, and action movies. He also helmed a number of acclaimed satire comedies. He began his cinematic career as an actor and went on to direct more than 80 movies.
Childhood Misdemeanors
During his adolescence, he was frequently in trouble with the law. He was kicked out of Newton High School after hurling a stink bomb at the head of the headmaster.
Career
During World War I (WWI), he joined the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps as a driver. While flying in WWI, he earned the nickname "Wild Bill."
Having started out as an actor, he quickly transitioned into the director, producer, and consultant roles behind the camera.
Among his other notable productions are "The Public Enemy" (1931) and " The Story of G.I. Joe” (1945).
