About William Skelly
William Skelly was a prominent businessman who earned most of his wealth through his oil business. In 1923, he organized the first International Petroleum Exposition.
Background
Skelly was born to William and Mary Jane Sweatman Skelly. He had five siblings. He was always business-minded and sold newspapers when he was a little boy. After completing school at 14, he enrolled in business school and worked with his father to sell oil-well tools to other oil fields in Pennsylvania. After fighting in the Spanish-American War, he returned home and worked as a manager for the Citizens Gas Company.
Career
During the oil booms happening across Middle America, Skelly decided to get into the industry. In 1916, he moved to Kansas and opened the Midland Refining Company as an independent oil producer. By 1919, he had incorporated Skelly Oil Company and took his business to Texas.
Other Interests
The oil tycoon was also interested in aviation and opened the Spartan School of Aeronautics for aspiring pilots and engineers. He also opened a municipal airport, which was later purchased by the City of Tulsa and renamed Tulsa Municipal Airport. He also owned a radio station.
Death
Skelly died in 1957 and was survived by his wife, Gertrude and daughters, Carolyn and Joanne.
