William Osler Rank
About William Osler
Mostly credited as the “Father of Modern Medicine”, William Osler was the first medical teacher to move his students from the lecture room to the bedside of a patient for their clinical training. He was also one of the founding fathers of Johns Hopkins Hospital.
His success story started in 1874 when he was hired as one of the professors at McGill University Faculty of Medicine. The Canadian physician later moved to the University of Pennsylvania before founding the Association of American Physicians alongside some prominent names in the profession.
He also established the Royal Society of Medicine’s History. He was one of the founders of the Medical Library Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
Family
He was born to Reverend Featherstone Lake Osler and his wife Ellen Free Picton. He was the brother of renowned politician Sir Edmund Boyd Osler and Britton Bath Osler who worked as a lawyer.
Education
He studied at Trinity College in Toronto and McGill University Faculty of Medicine.
Legacy
Many buildings have been named after him. Examples of these places are the Sir William Osler Elementary School and the William Osler Health System, all in his native Canada. The American Association for the History of Medicine has also introduced the William Osler Medal to reward some outstanding professionals.
Trivia
