About William Kristol
American publisher William Kristol is best known for his role as a commentator on various networks such as CNN. He founded and worked as the editor of the Weekly Standard, an American political magazine. He is also well known as the director and founder of Defending Democracy Together, an advocacy group.
Family
He was born to Irving Kristol and Bea Himmelfarb. He has three children with his Susan Scheinberg, whom he got married to in 1975. The couple met while he was a student at Harvard.
Education
The renowned publisher obtained his Bachelors, Masters and PhD in political science at Harvard University. Prior to his university education, he studied at Collegiate School for Boys in Manhattan.
Career
During the summer of 1970, he worked as an intern at the White House and six years later served as an aide to American diplomat Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who was then campaigning for a Senate seat.
He was the campaign manager for a failed campaign for Alan Keyes against Paul Sarbanes for the Maryland Senatorial seat.
Kristol was a political philosophy and U.S politics teacher at the University of Pennsylvania and the Kennedy School of Government. In 1985, he worked as the chief of staff to United States secretary of education William Bennett and then later chief of staff to vice president under Dan Quayle during George H.W. Bush administration.
Together with Lawrence F. Kaplan, an editor of world affairs, he wrote “The War Over Iraq: America’s mission and Saddam Hussein’s “Tyranny” in 2003.
He established the news magazine The Weekly Standard together with John Podhoretz in 1994. The publisher later became a member of the panel on ABC’s political affairs program “This Week”.
Kristol played a major role in the failure of Bill Clinton’s health care plan in 1993. He also vehemently opposed U.S. President Donald Trump and his policies.
He is a member of the Democratic Party, although he was affiliated with the Republicans from 1980 to 2020.
