About William Beebe
William Beebe’s collaborative works with the New York Zoological Society made him a famous naturalist during the mid-20th Century. He started gaining attention in 1899 when he was employed as the assistant manager of ornithology at the Bronx Zoo. His primary responsibility during his time at the zoo was to breed and sustain the population of the birds at the center.
His popularity increased in the 1930s when he performed many deep dives with the Bathysphere which was built by Otis Barton. As part of his works, Beebe released many books with some named “High Jungle” and “A Monograph of the Pheasants”.
Family
His father Charles Beebe was a newspaper executive. He had a brother called John. His marriage to American writer Mary Blair Rice ended in 1913.
Education
Beebe studied at Columbia University.
Recognitions
He received the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal in 1918. His other awards included the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal, and the John Burroughs Medal. He also received honorary degrees from institutions like Colgate University, and Tufts University.
Trivia
He was a student of Henry Fairfield Osborn, a famous American paleontologist.
He was the founder of the William Beebe Tropical Research Station.
