By the end of his career, he was remembered best for his work as the “Today” morning show’s weather reporter; co-host of the “Joy Boys” radio show; creator and originator of the McDonald’s clown character Ronald McDonald; and the narrator of programs on NASA TV.

He was the son of Thelma Phillips and Willard Scott. He had two children with his first wife, Mary Dwyer Scott to whom he was married from 1959 to 2002 (her death year). He got married for the second time in 2014 to Paris Keena.
