About Wilhelm Furtwängler
The romantic style of German conductor and composer Gustav Heinrich Ernst Martin Wilhelm Furtwängler made him well-known in classical music as one of the best symphonic and opera conductors of the 20th century.
His Career
He attended Munich University and served as Felix Mottl's assistant from 1907 to 1909. He took over as conductor of the Berlin Opera performances from Richard Strauss in 1920.
In 1922, he took Hungarian conductor Arthur Nikisch’s place as the Leipzig Gewandhaus concerts' conductor. His previous engagements included the Berlin State Opera (1922), the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1930), the Bayreuth Festivals (1931–1922), and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (1922).

Furtwängler criticized Adolf Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany and declared that Hitler would not stay in power for long.
Jewish musicians were forced out of work and began to leave Germany as Nazi Germany increased their persecution. The Nazis knew Furtwängler was opposed to their policies and might also decide to go abroad, so the Berlin Philharmonic, which employed many Jews, was exempt.
In 1933, Bruno Walter was dismissed from his position as principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Nazis asked Furtwängler to replace him for an international tour, however, Furtwängler declined this offer.
