About Werner von Blomberg
Werner Eduard Fritz von Blomberg was the first Minister of War in Adolf Hitler’s government. He served in World War I and later became the Commander-in-Chief of the German Armed Forces, building up the military ahead of World War II.
Family
He got married to Charlotte Hellmich in 1904 and later Erna Gruhn in 1938.
Career
In January 1927, Bloomberg assumed office as Chief of the Troop Office, a position he held until September 30, 1929. He became a national figure when he was appointed Minister of Defense in Hitler’s administration. In this capacity, he worked to strengthen and grow the size of the army. He served from January 1933 – May, 1935. He was preceded by Kurt von Schleicher.
The Ministry of Defense was changed to the Ministry of War and Bloomberg’s was accorded the title of Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces (Wehrmacht). He took office from May 1935 and left in January, 1938. He was succeeded by Wilhelm Keitel as Chief of the High Command.
Death
He died of colorectal cancer on March 13, 1946.
