Walther Heinrich Alfred Hermann von Brauchitsch was a German field Marshal who became the Supreme Commander of The German Army from 1938 – 1941 and was an active participant in WWI and WWII.
Family
Brauchitsch was born to cavalry general Bernhard Eduard von Brauchitsch and Charlotte Bertha von Gordon. He got married to Elizabeth von Karstedt in 1910 and they were divorced in 1938. He later got married to Charlotte Rueffer in 1938. He had three children.
Education
He enrolled in the military academy in Potsdam in 1895 and he later moved to Hauptkadettenanstalt Groß Lichterfelde and graduated in 1900 as a lieutenant in an infantry troop.
World War I
Brauchitsch had attained the rank of Captain at the time of World War I in August 1914. He became a staff officer to the XVI Army Corps close to Metz, France. He worked with the 34th Infantry Division and the Guards Reserve Corps during the war. He also participated in the “Battle of Verdun”, and the “Battle of the Argonne Forest” during 1914 – 1916.
Brauchitsch was engaged in battles such as the “Third Battle of the Aisne”, the “Aisne-Marne offensive”, the “Second Battle of the Aisne”, and the “Battle of Armentières,” and the” Battle of Flanders”. By the end of the war, he had attained the rank of major.
After WWI, he remained in service with the General staff and transferred to the 2nd Artillery Regiment in 1920 and served in the Ministry of Defence (Ministry of Reichswehr) in the Arms Department.
He served three years in the Arms Department and received a promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1925. He also became the Chief of Staff of the 6th Infantry Division in the city of Münster, Westphalia in November 1927. By 1931, he was promoted to major general.
Five years later, Hitler promoted him to colonel general and gave him an appointment as the Commander-in-chief of the German Army.
World War II
He encouraged punitive actions against the Polish population and played a major role in the deaths of many Polish captives who were taken in the defense of the Polish Post Office in Danzig.
He was discharged as Commander-in-chief of the German army following his failure to take Moscow in the Battle of Moscow between 1941 and 42.
Arrest and Death
Following the end of WWII, the general was arrested on the charge of war crimes. He died a few years later. The cause of death was pneumonia.
Trivia
On February 5, 1945, he was honored with a Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He also received a Golden Party Badge on April 20, 1939.
He was charged with war crimes and got arrested, however, he died in 1948 before he could be prosecuted.
