About Walter Model
Walter Model, born Otto Moritz Walter Model, was one of the most hard-driven German field marshals during the Second World War. He achieved many successes as a war commander and fulfilled several desires of the infamous Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Duisburg, Germany. In 1909, he graduated with an “Abitur” from Naumburg’s “Domgynasium”. He then entered the “Kriegsschule” in 1909, where he was made a lieutenant in the school’s 52nd Infantry Regiment (Von Alvensleben).
Army & War Highlights
During World War I, he held several regimental and staff positions before joining the “Reichswehr” in 1919. In 1938, he became a major general and led the “IV Army Corps” when Germany invaded Poland in 1939.
In 1942, he became a full general and commanded the Eastern Front’s Ninth Army. He was a key figure in planning the 1943 Battle of Kursk. After that, he was dispatched to several locations to fight Soviet offensives and later became known as Hitler’s “fireman”.
Death
On April 21, 1945, Model shot himself in the head and died at age 54. It is widely believed that he killed himself when he realized that the Soviets had charged him with war crimes, notably the killing of 577,000 individuals in detention camps and the deportation of over 100,000 people for slave labor.
