About Walter Krueger
Walter Krueger was an American army officer who led the US Army in the South West Pacific Area during the Second World War.
Background
Krueger was born in Flatow, West Prussia to Julius and Anna Krueger. After his father died, the family immigrated to the US and lived in Indiana. He attended Cincinnati Technical High School to study blacksmithing.
Military Service
In 1898, he enlisted in the army and served in the Spanish-American war. He returned home the following year to continue his studies, but was later re-enlisted to serve in the Philippine-American War. He also fought in the First and Second World Wars. He became the first soldier to be promoted from Private to General in the army.
Family Life
When he retired, Krueger wrote, “From Down Under to Nippon: the Story of the 6th Army in World War II.” Sadly, he encountered several controversies post-retirement. His son was dismissed from the army and his daughter murdered her husband.
Krueger died in 1967 after developing a series of illnesses.
