About Walter Cronkite
Walter Leland Cronkite began his journalism career in the 1930s as a news and sports reporter for newspapers. He is remembered as an iconic television and radio broadcaster as well as a news anchor. He rose to nationwide fame in the 1960s as the anchor of “CBS Evening News”, a position which he held for 19 years; from 1962 to 1981.
Notable events he reported on in the course of his career include the assassinations of President John Kennedy and Martin Luther King. He also reported on World War II and the Vietnam War.
Family Life
He was born to Helen Fritsche and Walter Leland Cronkite. His wife of almost 65 years was Mary Elizabeth Maxwell Cronkite – he had two daughters and a son with her. After her death in 2005, he dated singer, Joanna Simon.
Achievements
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 and became an inductee of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame in 1985.
Death
He passed away at the age of 92 on July 17, 2009.
