Background
Haislip was born on July 9, 1889, in Woodstock, Virginia. He was selected into the Military Academy at West Point in 1908 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1912. Haislip met and befriended Second Lieutenant Dwight Eisenhower (who later became the 34th president of the United States), a friendship that lasted throughout their lives.
Accomplishments
During the First World War, he was stationed in France and placed in charge of gunnery training. He was later transferred to Germany during its occupation as General Staff of General Headquarters at Coblenz. Upon his returning to the United States, he served as an instructor at West Point. During the Second World War, he was promoted to Major General in 1942 and commanded the 85th Infantry Division and then the XV Corps. After the war, he served in different capacities but retired as Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army in 1951.
Death
In 1971, aged 82, the military man passed away after suffering a stroke. He was survived by his wife Alice Jennings Shepherd. The two had gotten married in 1932.
