About Virginia Satir
Virginia Satir, popularly known as the "Mother of Family Therapy", was an author and psychotherapist who played a leading role in the development of the field of family reconstruction therapy.
Birth and Education
The psychotherapist lived most of her youth in Wisconsin. She was the eldest of five children of her parents – Minnie Happe Pagenkopf and Oscar Alfred Reinnard Pagenkopf.
Virginia Satir taught herself to read at the age of 9 and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1936. She completed her graduate studies at the University of Chicago in 1948.
Career
Satir began her work in therapy after graduating with a degree in social work school. With the support of her family, she cofounded the Mental Research Institute in 1963 and was granted permission to begin the first family therapy training programs. She tackled low self-esteem problems in relationships and several family feuds, which went a long way in helping the community.
2012 saw her being appointed as a member of the advisory board for the National Council for Self Esteem
Personal Life and Death
Satir married Norman Satire from 1951 to 1957 and had 3 children together. She died in 1988.
Achievements
Satir is usually considered in the field of family therapy and social work as a pioneering figure. She accomplished the following things:
- Satir was awarded the Gold Medal of "Outstanding and Consistent Service to Mankind" in 1976.
- She received an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in 1978.
- The American psychotherapist was named Honorary Member of the Czechoslovakian Medical Society in 1987.
