About Vincent Gigante
From 1944 to 1947, Vincent Gigante was a popular professional boxer. His performances in the boxing ring caught the attention of leaders of the notorious Luciano crime group who would later hire him as one of their mafia enforcers. In 1957, he attempted to assassinate crime boss Frank Costello but failed in his mission.
Two years later, he was grabbed by the security agencies for drug-related crimes and was given seven years prison sentence. It was during his time in jail that he came into contact with notorious mobster Vito Genovese. In 1981, he was made a leader of one of Genovese’s crime groups and was considered as one of the most powerful crime bosses in the U.S. during the 1980s and 90s.
Arrest and sentence
He was arrested in 1993 and charged with a number of crimes including conspiracy and racketeering. Throughout his trial, he feigned insanity but was sentenced to twelve years. In addition to the jail sentence, he was fined an amount of $1.25 million.
Family
He was one of the children of Yolanda and Salvatore Gigante, and was raised alongside four brothers including mobster Mario Gigante, and Catholic priest Louis Gigante. He was married to Olympia Grippa with whom he had eight children.
