About Vincent Auriol
Vincent Auriol was the first president of the Fourth Republic of France between 1947 and 1954. His term as president was often riddled with economic and political challenges.
Background
Auriol was the only child of Jacques Auriol and Virginie Durand. He received his law degree from the Collège de Revel and practiced as a lawyer in Toulouse. In 1908, he co-established the newspaper Le Midi Socialiste and was also the president of the Association of Journalists.
He was active in politics, serving as Mayor of Muret from 1925-1947 when he won the French national election.
Presidency
He was elected president in January 1947, but Auriol’s term was no easy one. During his term, there were a series of violent strikes and was heavily criticized for France’s war against Indochina. Auriol opted not to run for re-election when his term ended but still remained in politics.
