About Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher
Soviet agent Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher, code name Mark Collins or simply Mark, was apprehended in 1956 under the name Rudolf Inanovich Abel, and in 1962 was traded for an American plane pilot and a student.
Background
Fisher worked as a translator for the Comintern (The Communist International) after his family relocated back to the Soviet Union in 1921. After a brief stint in Soviet Military Intelligence, he was hired by the OGPU (1927). In 1936, he was appointed head of a facility that trained radio operators for clandestine activities and other espionage missions.
Known as the Hollow Nickel Case, he was nabbed by the FBI in New York on June 21, 1957, partly due to the attrition of his assistant. He received a 30-year prison term for espionage.
He served as a KGB trainer after arriving back in Moscow, earning the Order of Lenin in the process.
Death
The former spy and intelligence officer passed away after succumbing to lung cancer in November 15, 1971.
