Una Merkel, who started her career in movies by filling in for Lillian Gish in the 1928 film “The Wind”, went on to become one of Hollywood's most lauded actors, garnering nominations for an Oscar and winning a Tony Award in 1956.

Merkel wed Ronald L. Burla in 1932, and the couple was divorced in March 1947.
She nearly died on March 4, 1952, from a drug overdose. She died aged 82 on January 2, 1986 in Los Angeles.
Career
The actress made appearances in a few silent movies. After a few fruitless attempts, she resorted to the stage, where “Coquette” (1927) became her biggest hit.
She returned to acting in "Abraham Lincoln" (1930), "42nd Street"(1933), "Destry Rides Again" (1939) and "Kill the Umpire" (1950). In the former, which was directed by D.W. Griffith, she was cast as Ann Rutledge, and appeared alongside Walter Huston, Helen Freeman, and Otto Hoffman, among others.
