About Ulrike Meinhof
German journalist Ulrike Meinhof joined the konkret magazine as a writer in 1959. Three years later, she was promoted to the position of a chief editor. Known for her revolutionary campaigns during her school days, Meinhof played a key role in the establishment of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a militant organization.
Arrest and Death
Due to her association with RAF, she was arrested several times. In 1972, she was grabbed for her role in the infamous 1970 liberation movement. She was given an 8-years jail sentence in 1974 and appeared in court the following year for separate crimes.
She died before her trial came to an end. Due to the nature of her death (she was hanged in her prison cell), it was believed that she committed suicide. Others have also claimed that she was murdered.
Private Life
Her mother was called Dr. Ingeborg Meinhof and was raised alongside a sister named Wienke. Her two children with Klaus Rainer Röhl were called Bettina Röhl and Regine Röhl.
Education
She was very active during her time at the University of Münster.
Other Facts
Her death inspired the 1981 film “Birgitt Haas Must Be Killed”.
She joined the Communist Party of Germany in 1959.
