Twyla Tharp, an American dancer and choreographer, is regarded as one of the most gifted individuals to have ever graced the American stage and screen. She is best known for developing fresh and distinctive dance styles.
Early Life
Before completing her studies at Barnard College, she joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1963 and established her own troupe in 1965.
Career
In 1965, Hunter College hosted the premiere of her first choreography “Tank Dive”. For the Joffrey Ballet, she created the dance “Deuce Coupe” in 1973, set to music by The Beach Boys. She went on to choreograph “Push Comes to Shove” (1976), starring Mikhail Baryshnikov. “When We Were Very Young” in 1980 was her first performance on Broadway.
Honors
The veteran choreographer has got multiple Emmy Awards, many honorary doctorates, including one from Harvard University in 2018.
