Life Before Fame
The son of a Swiss father and a South African mother, Noah was born in a period of Apartheid in South Africa. He grew up in Soweto in a black settlement and attended Maryvale College, Johannesburg. The Apartheid system ended when he turned 10.
In 2002, he played an unsung role in an episode of the South African TV series “Isidingo.” After presenting “Noah's Ark” on radio, he appeared on a public TV channel.
His first unofficial stand-up comedy was at a nightclub where he kept the audience entertained with one funny story after another. That night was the precursor of what would be the career of a lifetime.
Life in the Limelight
As his fame spread, so did his public appeal. Soon, he was hosting TV shows and one sport show while scoring deals to host major award shows. In 2008, he competed in the reality TV show, “Strictly Come Dancing,” and a year later, hosted his debut solo comedy show “The Daywalker.”
On the heels of the first show, he organised a second show titled “The Racist.” This was held at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. After relocating to the United States in 2012, Noah featured in the TV talk show “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. This marked the first time a South African comedian had appeared on the show.
2013 saw him star in the TV comedy “Trevor Noah: African American,” while touring places in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
In 2014, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” was launched.
His comedy tours picked up speed with the introduction of comedy specials such as the 2015 “Trevor Noah: Lost in Translation.”
As an Author
Noah decided to add writing to his media credits and published his debut work “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood.” The book, which recounted his experiences during the late-apartheid period, made the list of New York Bestsellers. It's “Born a Crime" audiobook was Audible's highest rated audiobook of 2016.”
Awards
In 2015, he was MTV Africa Music Award's “Personality of the Year”. Seven years later, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” won the “Outstanding Talk Series” at the NAACP Image Awards.
