Anthony La Russa Jr., famously called Tony Larussa, is one of the most renowned figures in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is a former professional baseball player and became one of MLB's elite coaches after his retirement.
Background & Education
Tampa, Florida, is his birthplace. After he graduated from Jefferson High School, the Kansas City Athletics signed him in June 1962. Kansas then paid all his tuition fees during his undergraduate education at the University of South Florida. Additionally, he holds a law degree from Florida State University.
MLB Career Highlights
He played his debut MLB match in 1963. However, he played in the minor leagues for most of his career and had short spells in the major league with the Chicago Cubs, the Atlanta Braves, and the A's (Kansas City & Oakland Athletics). Larussa retired in 1977.
MLB Coaching Career Highlights
Between 1979 and 1986, he coached the Chicago White Sox. In 1983, he successfully led the team to win the "AL West title."
He managed the Oakland Athletics from 1986 until 1995. At Oakland, he won the 1989 World Series and three "AL championships (1988-1990)."
From 1996 to 2011, he managed the St. Louis Cardinals, winning two World Series titles (2006 & 2011) and three "NL championships."
As of 2021, he was a 4-time "Manager of the Year" and was coaching the Chicago White Sox on his second stint.
