Tune is a multi-talented artist who is mostly known as a dancer, choreographer and theatre director. He is a multiple-award-winning performer, having claimed awards such as Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award.
Family and Education
He was born to Jim Tune and Eva Mae Clark. The schools he attended include Mirabeau B. Lamar High School, Lon Morris College and the University of Texas. From the latter he obtained a degree in Fine Arts. He also obtained a Masters of Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Houston.
Career Highlights
Tommy Tune made his first Broadway appearances in the musical titled “Baker Street” in 1965. He also appeared in other Broadway productions such as “A Joyful Noise”, “How Now, Dow Jones”, “My One and Only” and “SeeSaw”. The latter, which was produced in 1973, was based on William Gibson’s book “Two for the Seesaw”.
Additionally, he directed other Broadway productions such as “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” NS “A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine”.
Tommy Tune was in the television series “Arrested Development”, which saw him appear in the revived edition of the series’ fourth and fifth season.
Awards
Tune has received a number of awards and nominations. Some include: a Tony Award for “Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical”.
In 1982, he won a Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Director of a Play” for the play “Cloud 9”. That same year, he took home the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Director of a Musical”. The award was for his work “Nine”, which was based on Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film “8½”.
Trivia
He is made a reference in the 2022 comic and murder television series “Murderville”.
