Personal Life
He was one of the twelve children of his parents, Dora Smith and Richard Smith. As a young boy, he suffered from pneumonia but grew up healthy. He studied at Lemoore High School and participated in sports. He took part in track and field and also played football and basketball. His skills and talent got him into San José State University on scholarship.
Career
He became an active athlete and participated in the Olympics in 1968. He had sustained an injury to his groin at the time but was determined to win and he did.
Achievement
In 1966 while he was still in university, he set a world record when he ran a 200m straight race in 19.5 seconds. His record was broken by Tyson Gay over four decades later. It is also a known fact that during his career as an athlete, he set several world records.
