About Tomas Rivera
Mexican-American writer Tomas Rivera is best known for writing the award-winning novel “y no se lo tragó la tierra.” He was also a proponent of the education of Mexican immigrants in America.
Background
Rivera was born to migrant parents, Florencio and Josefa in Crystal City, Texas. When was 11 years old, he was involved in a car accident and he decided to write a story about the incident. He attended Texas State University and then later earned his PhD at the University of Oklahoma.
Literary Career
After completing his doctorate degree, Rivera worked in education, first as a professor and then eventually rising to become the executive vice president at the University of Texas at El Paso.
But he was best known for his contributions to the literary world. In 1971, he received the first Premio Quinto Sol award for his work “y no se lo tragó la tierra.” Rivera was also active in the Mexican community, receiving an award for his contributions to the Chicano community. He served on several boards, including the Greater Riverside Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.
Death
Rivera passed away in 1984 and was survived by his wife Concepción.
