About Tom Flores
Thomas Raymond Flores is regarded as one of the most memorable figures in American football of his era. During his playing and coaching stints, he amassed a total of four Super Bowl titles. The first minority head coach to win a Super Bowl in professional football history, he was also the first Mexican starting quarterback.
Background
He played as quarterback for Fresno City College. He graduated in 1958 from the University of the Pacific. He married Barbara Fridell in 1961.
Career
In 1960, he was hired as a quarterback by the Oakland Raiders after two unsuccessful efforts to play professional football. In 1967, the Raiders dealt him to the Buffalo Bills, and two years later, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.
After ten years of playing, he started his coaching career serving as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Bills and the Raiders under Coach John Madden. In 1979, the Raiders gave him his first head coaching position and he steered them to victories in the 1980 and 1983 Super Bowls. For three seasons, he was the Seattle Seahawks' head coach.
Notable Achievements
He has been inducted into a number of halls of fame, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, the California Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, the University of the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, and the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
He was part of the Kansas City Chiefs team that defeated the Minnesota Vikings to win the Super Bowl in 1970.
As a coach, he won the Super Bowl title three times – in 1976, 1980, and 1984. He was the head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders team that defeated the Washington Redskins to win the 1984 Super Bowl title.
