Being affiliated to the Democratic Party, Tom Carper, in 2013, was appointed as the chairperson of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and he stayed in office till 2015.
Family and Education
He was born to Wallace Richard Carper and Mary Jean Patton. He studied at Whetstone High School and furthered his education at Ohio State University. He then attained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Delaware.
He ended his first marriage (which was to Diane Beverly Isaacs) in 1983. Two years later, he got married to Martha Ann Stacy and they both have two children.
Career
Senator Carper is a former military officer and he served as the Naval Flight Officer in the United States Navy for five years, that is, from 1968 to 1973.
His earliest political position was in 1977 when he won the election to become Delaware State Treasurer. He also won a seat in the U.S. House of Representative. He gained a bit of limelight when in 1992, he defeated B. Gary Scott from the Republican Party and was elected as the 71st Governor of Delaware. He served as the governor from 1993 to 2001.
His other political positions are ranking member of the Senate Environment Committee and United States Senator from Delaware.
Trivia
Over the years, Carper has supported policies such as tighter regulations on guns and other environmental policies. Carper, like many top Democratic politicians, was disappointed by the 2022 US Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.
