Thomas Phillip O’Neill, Jr., nicknamed Tip O’Neill, was a revered and renowned 20th century American Democratic politician. He served as Representative for North Boston, Massachusetts, and as Speaker of the “United States House of Representatives.
Background & Education
He was of Irish descent and was born in North Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was nicknamed “Tip” during his childhood after the famous Canadian baseball star James Tip O'Neill. O’Neill received his primary and high school education from Roman Catholic schools. In 1931, he graduated from St. John High School, Cambridge. The politician was an alumnus of Boston College, where he received his BA degree in 1936.
Political Career Highlights
In 1932, and at age 20, he actively participated in the campaign of former American President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1936, the politician was elected to the “Massachusetts House of Representatives” and served in the House until 1952. He was then elected to the “US House of Representatives” in 1953.
Between 1953 and 1987, he served as the Democratic Representative for North Boston, Massachusetts, in the US House of Representatives.
He became the 47th Speaker of the US House of Representatives in 1977 and served until 1987. As of 2022, he was the only Speaker of the House to serve for five successive full Congresses.
Death
He died aged 81 on January 5, 1994, after suffering cardiac arrest.
