About Thornton Wilder
Thornton was a Pulitzer winning American novelist and playwright whose works are very popular.
Personal Life
At birth, he was named Thornton Niven Wilder. His father was an editor for a newspaper and later became a United States diplomat. Because of the nature of his father’s job, he grew up with his siblings in China. He was bullied in school because he was seen to be overly smart. Later in 1920, he got into The American Academy and studied archaeology.
Career
He schooled in Thacher School where he started developing interest in writing. He got into the Army as a part of the Coast Artillery Corps during World War I. In 1926, he worked on “The Cabala” which was his first novel.
Achievement
His book “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” which he released in 1927 earned him a Pulitzer Prize. About ten years later, his play titled “Our Town” earned him another Pulitzer for drama. For the third time, he again won a prize for work done on his play “The Skin of Our Teeth”. In 1968, his novel titled “The Eight Day” won him the National Book Award.
Death
In 1975, he suffered a heart failure and passed on.
