About Thomas S. Monson
Thomas S. Monson spent all his life as a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the age of 22, he was ordained as a bishop of the church, having served in a number of positions.
Nine years later, he moved to Canada to serve as the church's president in the country. In 1963, he was named to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
After the death of Gordon B. Hinckley in 2008, Monson was appointed the President of the Church, becoming the 16th person to serve in that position.
Other works
Prior to becoming the president of the church, he managed a newspaper company called the Deseret News. In 1981, he was selected into the President's Task Force for Private Sector Initiatives by Ronald Reagan. He also served on the board of the Church Educational System.
Family
He was one of the children of Gladys Condie Monson and George Spencer Monson. He spent his early years with his five siblings. In 2013, he divorced his wife Frances Beverly Johnson, whom he had married in 1948. The couple were blessed with three kids.
Education
He graduated from West High School in 1944 and began his education at the University of Utah later that year.
Awards
In 1971, he was given the Silver Beaver award by the Boy Scouts of America. He also received many honors from institutions like the Salt Lake Community College, Brigham Young University, and Dixie State College.
Trivia
During the Second World War, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He also published lots of books with some titled “Christmas Gifts, Christmas Blessings” and “Meeting your Goliath”.
