About Thomas Henry Ismay
Thomas Henry Ismay developed an interest in sailing at a very young age. When he was sixteen years, he apprenticed under some local shipbrokers. After partnering with a number of shipowners, the English business executive became the owner of the flag used by the White Star Line in 1867.
Four years later, he, with support from William Imrie, established the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. The company would be known for its famous ocean liner called RMS Titanic.
Family
His dad Joseph Ismay was a shipbuilder and also the son of Mary Sealby. The business executive had a twin sister named Charlotte. In 1859, he became the husband of Margaret Bruce. The couple had seven children including Joseph Bruce Ismay who was one of the passengers on the Titanic ship.
Education
He attended a Brampton-based high school.
Trivia
Aboard the S.V. Charles Jackson, he embarked on a journey to Chile in 1856.
He also partnered with renowned shipbuilder Gustav Wolff.
