About Thomas E. Dewey
Thomas E. Dewey was known for his work in the legal and political fields. He worked as a federal prosecutor after earning his LLB degree in 1925. He first came to prominence as a special prosecutor in New York City when he took on perpetrators of organized crime as well as some members of the American Mafia in the 1930s.
He served as the 33rd District Attorney of New York County from 1938 to 1941. As a politician, he served as the 47th Governor of New York (1943-1954) and represented the Republican party in the 1948 and 1952 US presidential elections both of which he lost.
Family Life
He grew up in Owosso, Michigan, the son of Annie Thomas and George Martin Dewey. He married Frances Eileen Hutt, a singer and stage actress in 1928. Their marriage produced two sons.
Death
He died on March 16, 1971 after suffering a massive heart attack during a golfing vacation in Miami, Florida.
