About Theodor Heuss
This German-born liberal politician is most fondly remembered for his contributions to the stabilization of democracy in parts of Germany during the years of rapid reconstruction and development known as Wirtschaftswunder.
Early Life
Theodor Heuss first attended and graduated from the Karlsgymnasium in 1902 before proceeding to study economics and political science at the universities of Munich and Berlin. He later gained his doctorate at the University of Munich in 1905.
Career
The politician began his career as a political journalist, working from 1905 to 1912. Heuss worked with controversial publishing houses such as Die Hilfe and Neckarzeitung, where he took the position of editor-in-chief from 1912 to 1918. He took his political career a bit further and was a member of the Progressive People's Party from 1910 to 1918.
He also became a part of the German Democratic Party from 1918 to 1933 and then moved on to the Democratic Party of Germany between 1947 to 1948. He later left the party after a year to join the Free Democratic Party from 1948 to 1963.
Positions Held
In the decade before World War II broke out, he served as a member of the Reichstag from 1930 to 1933, then a Member of the Bundestag in 1949. He was promoted later that year to become the Bundestag Leader of the Free Democratic Party group from 1948 to 1949 and then went on to become the President of Germany from 1949 to 1959.
Personal Life
The politician was married to Elly Heuss-Knapp from 1908 to 1952. He survived his wife by about nine years.
