About Thelonious Monk
Thelonious Monk was an American jazz composer and pianist regarded as one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Throughout his career, he composed and released numerous famous hits such as Blue Monk, In Walked Bud and Round Midnight. He was posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and an induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 1993 and 2009 respectively.
Personal Life
He was born to Barbara and Thelonious Monk. In 1949, he got married to Nellie Smith, with whom he fathered two children. The marriage lasted until his death in 1982.
Trivia
He started playing the piano when he was only six years old.
In 1958, he was severely beaten by policemen in Baltimore, Maryland after he refused answering their questions.
