About Tex Johnston
Tex Johnston, in full Alvin Melvin Tex Johnston, was one of America’s most accomplished test pilots of the 20th century. He worked with several aviation companies and institutions, including Boeing, Bell Aircraft, and NASA. He was a National Aviation Hall of Famer.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Admire, Kansas. In 1923, he graduated from Emporia High School and enrolled in Spartan Aeronautics. At Spartan, he was able to earn an Aircraft & Engine Mechanic’s license and a Limited Commercial Pilot’s license. He later joined “Inman’s Flying Circus,” where he worked as a mechanic and pilot. His experience at “Inman’s” helped him to start barnstorming with a “Command-Aire” biplane.
Career Highlights
In 1939, Johnston entered the “Civilian Pilot Training Program” of the “US Army Air Corp.” However, during the period of World War II, he was transferred to the “U.S. Army Air Corps Ferry Command,” where he was ferrying aircraft.
Between 1942 and 1948, he worked at Bell Aircraft Company as their test pilot. He tested the “XP-59A,” America’s first jet aircraft.
He worked for Boeing in 1949 and was the test pilot for the “XB-47,” the first “swept-wing jet bomber” in the world. Johnston worked with NASA and managed their “Apollo” and “Saturn” programs.
Death
He died of Alzheimer’s disease at age 84 on October 29, 1998.
