About Terence Tao
Hailing from Australia, Terence Tao is a mathematician and author. He is interested in researching topics like harmonic analysis, algebraic combinatorics, geometric combinatorics, arithmetic combinatorics, probability theory, compressed sensing, partial differential equations and analytic number theory.
Since childhood, Tao has shown extraordinary mathematics ability. He has been the youngest participant in the International Mathematical Olympiad. At the age of 15, Tao published his debut assistant paper. The following year, he earned both his Master’s and Bachelor's degrees. When he was 21 years old, he was awarded his Ph.D.
As an author, his published books include “Solving mathematical problems, A personal perspective” in 2006, “Structure and randomness. Pages from year one of a mathematical blog” in 2008, “An epsilon of room, I: real analysis. Pages from year three of a mathematical blog” in 2010, “An introduction to measure theory” in 2011 and “Expansion in finite simple groups of Lie type” in 2015.
Education
He was educated at Research Science Institute, Flinders University and Princeton University.
Family
He is the offspring of Billy Tao and Grace Tao. He married Laura Tao and had two children including William Tao.
Awards
During his childhood days, he won several awards at the International Mathematical Olympiad competition in 1986, 1987 and 1988. Additionally, he has also won numerous awards as a mathematician including the 2002 Bôcher Memorial Prize, the 2008 Alan T. Waterman Award, the Onsager Medal (2008), the 2010 King Faisal International Prize, the 2010 Nemmers Prize in Mathematics, the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics (2014) and the 2021 IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal.
