Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is a preeminent figure in African politics. He is the president of Equatorial Guinea and the second president in the country’s history. In addition, he is one of the longest-serving non-royal country leaders globally, having been president since August 1982.
Background & Education
He is a native of Michoacan, Continental Equatorial Guinea, and the third among the ten sons of his parents.
The politician attended Cardenal Cisneros School Group for his primary education. He then earned a labor administration degree from Enrique Nov Okenve National College. In addition, he joined the General Military Academy, Zaragoza, and eventually became a lieutenant.
Presidency
As a young and vibrant military graduate, he held various positions under his uncle’s administration, thus President Francisco Macías Nguema, the first president of Equatorial Guinea. However, in August 1979, he ousted his uncle in a military coup and became president in 1982.
He led Equatorial Guinea to a new constitutional enactment in 1982, which saw them return to civilian rule. He has also contributed hugely to the country’s emergence as a critical oil producer globally. However, his government has been hugely criticized and accused of dictatorship, abuse of power, and corruption, since he has always placed his family members at the highest government positions.
