Teena Marie, born Mary Christine Brockert, was given the nickname “Ivory Queen of Soul” due to her strict adherence to the soul and R&B genres. She was not just a singer but a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. She became known for the popular singles “Lovergirl”, “Square Biz” and “Ooo La La La”.
Family Life
Her parents were Mary Anne, a renovator, and Thomas Leslie Brockert, a construction worker. She was of Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Italian and Native American ancestry. She was never married but had a daughter called Alia Rose.
Achievements
Her fourth and sixth albums; “It Must Be Magic” and “Starchild”, have been certified gold.
Death
Her daughter found her already dead in her home on 26 December, 2010. Autopsy results showed that she had died of natural causes.
