About Tarja Halonen
Halonen is the first female politician to become the president of Finland and governed the country for twelve years. She led the Scandinavian country from 2000 to 2012. She also became the first female to work as a lawyer in the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Union.
Personal life and Education
She is the daughter of Vieno Olavi Halonen and Lyyli Elina Loimola. She went to Kallio Elementary School and Kallio Gymnasium. The future Finnish politician studied Art History at the University Helsinki. She also acquired Masters of Laws in Criminal law.
She got married to Dr. Pentti Arajavi in 2000. They both have children from past relationships.
Career Highlights
She worked as a lawyer at Credit Surveillance Company and this was before she had obtained her degree. She also worked as the Social Affairs and General Secretary for the National Union of University Students in Finland.
Her political career started in the 1970s. In 1971, she joined the Social Democratic Party. Three years later, she became the Parliamentary Secretary. In that position, her love for politics grew and she decided to contest for municipal elections. She won the seat for the City Council Helsinki. While serving at her other position, she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Health, serving from 1987 to 1990. She also served as Minister of Justice and later Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In her long political career, Halonen held other positions, including Minister of Nordic Cooperation, Member of the Parliamentary Grand Committee, and Deputy Member of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.
She contested for presidency in 2000 and won her first election with over 51.6% vote while her opponent had 48.4 %. She secured a second term in office by winning a majority of the seats and about 51.8% of the votes.
Honors
She received Former Grand Master Grand Cross of the “Order of the Cross of Liberty”.
Halonen also received an international honor from Belgium – the Knight Grand Cordon of the “Order of Leopold”.
