About Tarcisio Bertone
Tarcisio Bertone is an Italian prelate and a Vatican diplomat who served as Archbishop of Vercelli from 1991 to 1995 and as Archbishop of Genoa from 2002 to 2006. In 2003, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the cardinalate. He was Cardinal Secretary of State from 2006 until his retirement in 2013. He was briefly the administrator of the Holy See between the time Pope Benedict XVI resigned and the election of Pope Francis. During this period he was also the head of state of the Vatican City State.
