About Tarana Burke
This New Yorker could be called the silence breaker for her role in exposing sexual assaults that had been swept under the rug such as Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse cases. Tarana Burke is the founder of the Me Too movement.
Early Life
Born to a low-income household in The Bronx, Burke was sexually assaulted and raped as a teenager. She did not allow her experience to break her down but fuel her passion to help others in her situation.
Career
Burke started helping young girls through her charity organization “Just Be” in 2003. In 2006, she founded the Me Too movement. However, the movement did not gain traction until 2017 when it was tweeted following Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse allegations.
She also creates awareness for victims of sexual assaults and is an author. The #MeToo became a symbol of hope for millions of people who had been sexually harassed or assaulted with celebrities lending their voices to the cause to ensure the hashtag went viral. This movement also exposed other prominent figures who were accused of sexual assault such as Bill Cosby and Kelvin Spacey.
