Steven Fletcher was the first quadriplegic politician to serve in the Canadian House of Commons from 2004-2015.
Early Life
He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was raised in Manitoba, Canada, where he attended Shaftesbury High School and later the University of Manitoba. In 1996, he became a quadriplegic after hitting a moose while driving.
Political Career
In 2001, the young politician was elected president of the Progressive Conservative Party (PCP) of Manitoba. Fletcher also served as Minister of State for Democratic Reform and later, Transport.
In 2015, he shifted his focus to provincial politics and was elected MLA for the Assiniboia Province. In that role, he introduced several legislations, including The Conflict of Interest Amendment Act, and The Manitoba Public Insurance Act. In 2019, he announced his return to federal politics.
